Amazon CEO to employees; "most developers are not coding."
A leaked recording from a June fireside chat revealed that Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman informed employees about the transformative impact of AI on the role of a software engineer.
He stated, "If you look ahead 24 months or so — I can’t predict the exact timeline — it’s conceivable that most developers may not be coding." He further emphasized that the developer role will evolve significantly in the coming year compared to 2020.
Matt Garman, who assumed the role of CEO of AWS on June 3 after nearly two decades with the division, began his journey as a full-time product manager in 2006 when AWS boasted just three members on its global sales team.
In the leaked conversation, Garman remarked that innovation will supersede traditional coding, indicating that developers will need to focus more on the final product.
"It just means that each of us has to get more in tune with what our customers need and what the actual end thing is that we're going to try to go build because that's going to be more and more of what the work is as opposed to sitting down and actually writing code," he reportedly stated.
