SoftBank CEO: Embrace the AI-led future

Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son predicts that within a decade, artificial intelligence (AI) will surpass human intelligence, urging Japanese companies to embrace it or risk falling behind. Speaking at a Tokyo conference, Son stated, "In 10 years, artificial general intelligence will exceed human intelligence by 10-fold."

Son, the founder of SoftBank, has experienced both triumphs and setbacks in his diverse technology investments.

Having recognized the potential of the Internet decades ago, he now aims to invest in AI-related companies. Expressing his desire to align with progress, he emphasizes the importance of not being left behind like an abandoned high street. Urging Japanese companies to embrace his vision of an AI-led future, he calls upon the youth of Japan to awaken from their slumber.

Concerns about generative AI were discussed at the Hiroshima summit in May, where Group of Seven leaders agreed to promote reliable AI. Japan's government also seeks to be part of international rule-making efforts to ensure the reliable use of AI.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, speaking at a science forum in Kyoto on Sunday, acknowledged the significant potential of generative AI and expressed hope that it would contribute to an even more convenient society. However, he also noted the need to address concerns of disinformation and risks to privacy and copyright.

Son said Japan should not repeat its past mistake of falling behind in the internet age, warning against reluctance of some companies due to fear of data leaks and other possible risks. SoftBank recently expanded on the Nasdaq listing of its chip subsidiary Arm Holding Plc, which Son acquired in 2016. Son said the British unit will be key to AI development.
